Coin Jewelry 20 Cents Worth

I really like the old coin vintage jewelry. The early coins were made in real sterling silver and real gold... The people and jewelrs took these coins and made them wearable - According to Davis and Pack (and others) its referred to as Folk Jewelry cuz thats what the folk wore. Its what was at hand.
You see coin jewelry mixed with old venetian beads - mostly read hearts - but some are multi colored and can be found from Mexico and Guatemala. ...See oldbeads website for very good (and expensive) examples.

This particular piece is now a pendant but I think it started as a pair of earrings.
Love the dangle fringe - all sterling - very cool piece of folk jewelry...

Porcayo Por Que No

The seller on this item indicates this is Manuel Porcayo - this is tytpical of the MP that I have seen - this one is marked with the Mano or Hand mark.
This doesnt really make my heart flutter so I guess it wouldnt be something I personally would purchase - but thats just me.

Now this piece is currenly on ebay its an older piece by A. PORCAYO - ok so I couldnt help but wonder if these PORCAYO's are somehow related - The name is not that common and I really dont run accross it in my searches. I really like this piece because it s remiscent of Aztec design.

I should prob ck my Billie H book to see if there is any relation but it just seems like too much work....If you have info pls let me know.

Hubert Harmon

Hubert Harmon is sooo hawt! I just got this BIN and I LOVE IT. The patina is amazing. Given the shape and the structure of it I wonder if its just the one half of a super cool belt buckle. The seller noted that this piece was in the Mexican Silver exhibit....I went to the exhibit but dont recall the Hubert Harmon pieces...I did see a few pieces at the Marc Navarro Gallery - pretty cool items that I had not seen before including some holloware...but the prices - ouch!! So I feel really lucky to have scored this piece - the most iconic and in Sterling, properly marked with the winged feet...Yup lucky.

Rossana Taxco

Rossana is currently listed - here is the sellers description:

This is a fabulous Modernist styled pin that is a bust of a woman. It is made out of Sterling Silver and has enameled accents in the design of blue and red-orange. The pin has a bar pin with a C-clasp that work perfectly. On the backside it is signed Rossana, Mexico, 925 and registration number TR-28. I would say that it is used and in excellent condition, the silver has a nice patina to it and there is no chipped or missing enamel. The pin measures approximately 2 2/8 inches in height and 1 inch wide.

When I first saw this it just screamed popowski. Modernist woman with red enameling in the left breast or heart area. I have never seen this designer before. The marks reminded me of ProSa - although this is not their usual design style.
Keep your eyes peeled for this particular designer = we may see more of him/her. If you know anything, pls post.

I really liked this piece - bidding starts at a confident $68.

I cracked up when I read this listing description on ebay:

Vintage Mixed Metals of Copper and Silver on Fumed Wood Plaque Signed "Talleres Monasticos with Logo Mexico Sterling and the Eagle 1"

Approximate measurements: 9 7/8"h" x 4.75"w x 7/8"d

Condition: Fair. There are scratches to the wood's fumed finish, including a rectangular area on the front lower right. The sterling of Maria is discolored, and may or may not clean up. (We're in the ladies against polishing club.)
The Talleres Monasticos was the silversmith workshop of the Benedictine monks of Cuernavaca.

I am a long-time member of The Ladies Against Polishing club and I didnt even know there was a club. Over the years, I have recruited many members, explaining that sterling silver does not have to look like shiny chrome.
Sterling when exposed to air, or oxidation, does tend to darken, leave it, do not succomb to the polishing temptation no matter how strong it may be....
When polishing is required, do it GENTLY with a silver cloth.

This is such an amazing piece of workmanship!
Nice weight and measuring about 3 inches in length, I wasn't surprised to see
Antonio's Crown mark (authenic).

Embellished with a garnet , this item was really unused since it was sold in Taxco in the late 1950's. Everything, in nice working order.

Ricardo Salas took over for Matilde after she passed away in 1960

PREHISPANIC INFLUENCED JEWELRY

Another important issue in the gallery are the jewels known as "matl". These were initiated by Matilde Eugenia Poulat, a native of Yucatan, who had studied in gold, in the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City.

Matilde in her jewelry was very influenced by Hispanic and particularly the Mixtec culture, discovered in 1932. She received international awards for her creations made between 1934 and 1960, the year she died. Her nephew Ricardo Salas, who worked for her, continued with their designs and among its most loyal customers are María Félix, Dolores del Rio, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Columba Domínguez, Joan Manuel Serrat, Princess Letizia Ortiz and Juan Pablo II, to quote the most important.

The jewels are made of silver, turquoise, amethyst and red coral. These include replicas of the jewels of Frida Kahlo.

Hubert Harmon Hallmark

You saw my long bio on Hubert Harmon which was posted in June 2010 - I always think everybody is familiar with his hallmark - but I am sadly mistaken.
So I am posting a sample his hallmark with winged feet altho sometimes his mark is just his name (and no winged feet). This particular mark is on Brass, which was not unusual for Hurbert - Brass, Copper, Sterling. I havent come across any gold pieces but if one popped up, it would not surprise me.
A hallmark on a piece is great but his designs are unmistakable - I mean really, Poodles, who does Poodles?! Hubert does thats who.

Fake or Authenic Margot de Taxco

The recently released Margot book is certainly an excellent reference for the serious hardcore Taxco collector or the beginning novice collector.
As the book hits the market, I expect the prices for Margot to shoot up.
So, whaat does that do to the market? Yeah, fakes and repros...thats not because of the relsease of the book the fakes and repros have long been out there.
But its nice to know the book addresses the Alba and Quiroz molds n makers.

Here is a pic of a recently listed 'authentic' and 'vintage' Margot de Taxco. I would expect lots more of this will be coming up - shop cautiously...again, nothing wrong with knockoffs and remakes as long as thats how they are being sold - when you cant afford the more expensive authentic pieces, this is a good alternative - just my little opinion...so check the pic and know what to l@@k out for as NOT vintage NOT authentic - yeah, shop cautiously.

Margot de Taxco Book Review

Thanks to my fellow Blogger Zoe for her brief comments and review on the recently released Margot book. I wanted to wait like a minute before I posted but with Zoe's comments I will go ahead. I want to say that the pics and quality was exceptional - all color plates with no drawings or depictions...very nice and no expense spared in the production.
But yes, I would have like seen some other less known or seen pieces (I missed the Roman numerals set) and I should have just sent in my pics of my Margot = my favorite being the rare and hard to find zodiac necklace with all 12 pieces hanging from it. But there were some amazing pieces pictured like that blue or purple carved set. I saw that in the first Mexican exhibit and its breathtaking.

I would have liked to have seen some text and pics of some of the other Taxco women designers - Bernice Goodspeed, Victoria, Carmen Beckmann, or Matl. But no, just more Los Castillo = I love Antonio but he already has books and exhibits = can we see something else por favor?

The research was WoW but not sure that I really wanted to know that much about Margots mom. I wanted to know more about the end of her career and her life - dying penniless on a friends couch. And that Mr. Quiroz both a hero and a leech - saving her molds then capitalizing on them.

I look foward to a book on Matl, Carmen, Victoria, Brenda, Agnes, Any woman who lived and worked in any male dominated industry (esp in Mex) is more than ok in my book....

Yeah, Sanborns. Home of fine sterling silver and Fred Davis. Here come these nice handpainted pendants.
I would classify these as folk art - handpainted wood pendants with typical Mexican images. I think my favorite is the batea bowl - too cute. These are super hard to find. I have a necklace with these types of small handpainted wood pendants - but the pendants are much smaller. Except for the pictures in the Davis and Pack book, I never see these. So, I felt fortunate to have found these at a reasonable price. Not sure if these will actually be pendants - but we will see.

Frank Lowenstein Cuernavaca - Mexico City DF

I just saw this on the Maestros de Taxco website - here is their description on Lowenstein:

This amazing studio piece was made by designer Frank Lowenstein in Cuernavaca Mexico. Like most of his pieces it is a one-of-a-kind collectible ring. The ring is completely hand-wrought and Mr. Lowenstein has specialized in unique stones that he cuts, polishes and then "listens to" so he can make the most glorious rings. This ring is made in sterling and stamped with Frank's hallmark.

No pic of the Frank Lowenstein hallmark was located or posted. Also, this is the first time I have come upon this particular designer. I will have to do some more research to see where Lowenstein is from.

TISSOT Taxco Designer

UPDATE:

The designer is IONE Tissot - she is the daughter of Felix Tissot. Currently Ione Tissot is the owner of the original "Casa Aquilar" that Felix bought from Hector Aguilar and restored, she offers B&B on a limited basis and you can visit her at Casa Aguilar.

IONE works out of Taxco and indicates she made these particular earrings in the early 90's. I love the design - reminds me of Hector Aguilar.
Not sure if IONE had numerous pieces but I think we will be seeing more of her.

I am not familiar with this designer - TISSOT.
I have seen the ceramic works by Felix Tissot but not jewelry - I have to consider if they are in some way related tho since Tissot is not that common...
These afre earrings 3 1/2 inches long. These look newer to me due to the 4 digit marks and 950 or 960 silver content. 950 screams made last year to me - thats just me tho - I'm sure its at least 5 years old.

In the year 1956 a naturalized US citizen of French origin arrived in Taxco, Mexico to start a new life, a new ceramic studio and a new family. Like many of the artists that had been drawn to Taxco's climate and congenial group of worldly ex-pates that had arrived to seek an ideal, Felix Tissot was looking to start a new life. He had been living at Leona Valley outside Los Angeles in a barren part of the Mojave desert where he was slowly establishing himself as a "Contemporary Modern" ceramist and his work had reached a level of professional production that he had several exhibits in the early 1950's at the famous Gump's department store in San Francisco.

After arriving in Taxco, Felix soon set up a studio in partnership with Antonio Castillo, at #17 Calle Veracruz on the corner across from the Santa Veracruz church and a year and a half experiment that produced a few rare Tissot/Castillo signed pieces. Felix also met a beautiful and talented artist from Canada, Jane Keenan and in short order they were married and living in an apartment in what is now Taxco's municipal hall "Casa Jana" where we see them over breakfast. Here also is seen the first line of ceramics that Felix produced in Taxco. To me it has the "Modern Look" similar to the Dansk line of matt glazed utility pottery.

Los Castillo Pectoral Necklaces

I thought I would share some exquisite, yet super hard to find, Los Castillo Pectoral neclaces. These are typically pictured in any of the Big Books of Mexican Silver...most gracing the neclace of the author (Penny Morrill).
These necklaces have exceptional repousee work and are marked with an added circle tag with Los Castillo marks and design number. Usually, there is no backing, so the repousee work is easy to see. Some pieces, however, do have a backing. Despite this, their size they are deciptively light weight. One of the hallmarks of good workmanship.

I was able to acquire the Los Castillo Pectoral pictured above - I found a pic on Worthpoint archives where their description includes this piece selling for over $4k - In a good economy, that could even be true - Today though, I was able to acquire it for much less.

These I found on the Maestros de Taxco where it was POR or Price on Request - which you know I believe translates into over $3-4,000 and the Silver Huntress which listed their piece at a reasonable $2,200.

SIGI Mixed Media Plaque

Super hard to find at a good price Modernist Sigi Plaque.
The only draw back on these is that they are sooooo heavy (like 10 lbs.) that I always think the piece and or the wall on which it is hanging must be reinforced due to the weight factor.

There are smaller plaques but the full effect of the modernist piece could be lost or go unnoticed.

I got one some years ago at a super cheap price - and I ignorantly traded it for another piece. Mostly because I couldnt hang it due to the weight - So I would lean it against the wall. So since then, I dont trade and I have been looking to replace my super-modernist Sigi Plaque...and here it is. I havent seen it upclose and personal, but it looks like it might need a little buffing - like someone shoved in the closet against some stuff and got a bit scratchy...no big deal. Its a good price for this 20in by 10 in piece of art work by this artist...yay!

DIA DIODATO Taxco

This item just popped up on ebay. Here is the sellers description:

In all my years of collecting vintage Mexican Silver, I've never, ever found a piece marked by hard-to-find maker, Dia Diodato. And this puzzle/buckle bracelet is a true rarity indeed, vintage -- circa 1945. This is called a puzzle/buckle bracelet due to the unique way in which it clasps; if you don't know the trick, you won't be able to open it! The slide portion of the buckle set flips open which then allows you to move the tongue of the bracelet away from the prong that slips through one of the two open holes. Unique!

The other feature that makes this bracelet very unique is that the taller hand rivets two narrow, curved bars of rosewood along the sides of the bracelet, using a design/material motif that William Spratling also used. The bracelet is pin hinged in three places and all work very smoothly. A nice piece, a rare maker!

So I have to concur, in all my years of collecting, this is the first time I have seen this designer. When I did some quick checking I found nothing except for the name pop up on Sterling Hallmark pages.

The belt buckle design bracelet never did much for me tho - it seems every other designer was doing it too....So I ususally dont reach for it when I am shopping...Maybe now I will be more inclined to (tho I doubt it)...

Authentic or Reproduction Antonio

By request, I thought I would list a couple items listed on ebay that - to me - are questionable. Here is my opinion on 4 alleged Authentic Antonio Pineda - 3 bracelets and a necklace.
Above, is the necklace with an opening bid of $800. A similar necklace from about a year ago closed at around $3,000 - I remember cuz I was a low bidder - tho it was a bit over my little budget...
All four pieces do have the 970, Antonio crown mark, spread eagle with 17.
Now check all four items for a YY or ZZ mark on any of these items. There are absent, not there, missing.
Antonio also usually had design numbers on his pieces as well. Also, not present.

Now the mark pictured above with the eagle looks a bit hinkey to me...too wingy or something.
Additionally, one of the item location is Thailand - the others are in Paris...same seller. When I looked at the sellers feed back about a week ago, it was zero. Now its over 50.

When I first these pieces I was impressed but on closer examination, I'm not that sure. Now, I havent seen them and not handled them and I could be dead wrong. But this time around I probably wont be pulling out my ebay charge card...
Shop carefully and compare markings.

Here is what I think is good or authentic mark - note the YY and partial design number - this is from the Cross pendant necklace with moonstone hanging from velevet cord.

Brass Handmade Mexican

I see these every once in awhile...This one is currently on ebay BIN @ $49.
Handmade, kinda Brutalist in design brass/copper jewelry from Mexico - I dont think from Taxco but not sure. Acapulco more likely, since its closer to the Pal Kapeyne (sp?) who had a workshop just outside.
This pictured cuff bracelet looks like late 80's and 90's to me.
The jewelry pieces from this design era just scream Mexican-made -
I think you can tell just from the workmanship - and they were trying so hard.

American brutalist came about 2 decades earlier - The 60's and 70's. Also sometimes referred to as Hippie Jewelry.
Smaller in size, using the same or similar material of primarily Brass, you can clearly see their prefered design choice of organic mimimalist. American made brutalist period is my preferred brass jewelry pieces when I am spending my hard earned cash. The pieces were well crafted with attention to detail. I have yet to see any signed pieces but there is one designer that has a distinct design detail - he adds a cube somewhere in his jewelry. I happen to see and purchase a small cuff bracelet - I got it cuz of the cube. Who knew?! Sadly I cannot recall his name and God forbid they would have a signed any of their jewelry....

Having compared Mexican and American brutalist, noting my preference for American, I do have to note that one of my earlier posts referenced early Mexican Folk jewelry made from copper and brass. Because its clearly Folk Jewelry I would not refer to it as brutalist. Their only commonality is the material used.
Love Love Love Mexican Folk Jewelry - mostly the ingenuity at using readily available raw materials - yeah, the coins in their pockets and jars...

I am looking forward to a good reference book on Brutalist Brutish Brusque Very Affordable Jewelry.

SPRATLING Necklace Hands Holding Flowers

Iconic Spratling design of Hands Holding Flowers in carved amethyst.
This particular piece seems to have been separated from its original chain. The necklace like this I have seen has nicely designed hidden hook closures at each end. Which might explain why this one is missing.
The 'chain' is really composed of three separate strands of one inch sterling silver hollow beads. Very cool.
Kid can U please confirm you still have this necklace??
My kid loves to wear it to the grocery store...LOL There's no better place for Spraling...

Eisenberg Original in Mexico

Rare and hard to find - these are now popping up on ebay.
This one has a reserve with an opening bid of $9.99.
The workmanship is ok - actually, its not very good at all.
I have to ck my books to see which workshop executed the Eisenberg line.
Eisenberg took the same route as Marcel Boucher and Coro - American companies that during the second world war went to Mexico in search of Sterling and new and exciting designs....
Except for Eisenberg Original, the designs and workmanship from Mexico (Parisina, Coro) were exceptional.
My opinion of course. I do like that Eisenberg Original are rustic looking with mesoamerican designs....Other than the green stones, I havent seen any other colored stones...
OK so how many Eisenberg Originals do you have??
Here is a bit more info I found:

During the 40's some of the costume jewelry being sold in the US by US companies was "outsourced" to Mexico. Eisenberg Original produced some silver & non-silver jewelry there, much of it set with a dyed green onyx. If you read Vintage Fashion & Costume Jewelry, you will find an article "Eisenberg Ole'" about these pieces, authored by Bobye Syverson, in Vol. 17 No. 1, 2007, one picture presented here = www.Sparklz.com/706/u70624pic.jpg .

When I saw these they just screamed Patzcuaro. Now, there are a couple of issues with that: First, they are marked or stamped TAXCO with a spread eagle mark of what looks like 191. Second, I have not seen any documented earrings in this particular style for Patzcuaro.
OK so why do I think they are Patzcuaro?
For the two obvious reasons: fish & coral.
Despite the markings - I'm going with design on this one and say its Patzcuaro.
I love them and they are a full 3 inches long = how cool are they?!

I wanted to get a second expert opinion on my self-proclaimed Patzcuaro earrings...I asked the proprietor of OLDBEADS to ck them out - Here is his discussion -

I am pretty sure they are not typical in any way and not illustrating any particular style. The fish don't mean much anymore as far as placing where they were made as there are plateros all over Mexico using the fish image now.

And truly, coral is not that typical in Patzcuaro - there is no access to coral other than buying it from someone bringing it from the Gulf - they have generally used glass beads the colour of coral.

This is most likely a contemporary platero in Taxco who has designed their own piece - this is not tradition in any sense but a personal design. The screw on earrings are more a european style as well - most Mexican women have pierced ears, pierced when they are still babes.

Guadalupe Castellanos Grotesque & Rare

Oh La La - Rare and hard to find - Mostly because this Taxco designer has no noted or documented signature...Instead, collectors are challenged to identify the characteristics of work.

Luckily for me, these earrings were pictured in the Davis & Pack book - see page 204 Plate 130. Its actually a drawing of the earrings with an accurate description of sterling and brass. The only markings on my earrings is Mexico Silver. Also, they are bigger than I anticipated about 2 1/2 inches long - the outside border is sterling with the dimpled interior brass. Pre-hispanic motif, well constructed and pierced to boot.

I liked Gualdalupe's idea of no markings - you really have to dig to find any of his work...Grotesque though it is...I love it!

Celia Harms Mexican Sterling Designer

How cool is this ring? It screams modernist in design and certainly looks Scandinavian - a bit NE From-esque...
So I was pleasantly surprised to see a Mexico marking - You will note I say Mexico and not Taxco specifically. For two reasons. The most obvious is it is not signed or marked Taxco but Mexico. Second, I can find nothing about Celia Harms.

If you have any info about Celia Harms that you can share, I would certainly appreciate it...I checked the Hallmark Mexico page (925-1000) and the Mystery Marks (Modern Silver) page - I got nothing.
Does anyone know Marbeth? Maybe she can shed some light on this designer...

I found this great Parisina Dancer brooch - the back pin is missing but the price was right. Its great...My dancer brooch is blue but I found other colors including yellow and greet. Prices varied for this dancer brooch but most started at around $200

Los Ballesteros Mark on Matl Design - Authentic or Fake?

Matl design with Los Ballesteros mark brooch currently on eBay.
The design is clearly Matl or Salas or Domingues - take your pick.
This design and style is reproduced over and over.
But this brooch clearly has the Los Ballesteros markings even tho (to my limited knowledge) there is NO documented Matl design by the Los Ballesteros workshop.

Look at the marks in the pics - it was applied after the brooch was completed.
Me and my friend have debated this in the past:

Are applied marks fake?

I say they are fake - stamped on a separate piece of silver, cut out, then tacked on a finished piece.
Authentic pieces dont have applied or tacked marks.
They are stamped or marked right on the piece.
No pieces, no tacking.

My friend disagrees. She believes that the pieces are authentic even tho the markings are stamped and then placed separately.

I'm hoping the pics help to distinguish authentic designer pieces from those that are not.

I compared it to the Davis and Pack Covarrubias design and the folks in my brooch are facing the opposite way. Also, mine is not as detailed - which is ok cuz it is still great. Super hard to find and way cool.

Pluma Azteca Los Castillo

I believe Los Castillo is the only workshop that does the Pluma Azteca technique really well. I have seen other pluma azteca pieces but not marked by Los Castillo. The technique is really quite different using feathers much the pliqueajour (sp) of the Europeans.

Pluma Azateca is frequently mistaken for enameling - why? I couldnt say - clearly its not.

So keep your eyes peeled for your Los Castillo find.

Tita Rubli - Oaxacan Jewelry

I blogged about Tita and her Mazahua Jewelry - her website offers traditional Oaxacan Jewelry for less that what you find on other websites including ebay.
So I had to order a couple of pairs of earrings just to ck it out. One with coral colored stones.
Just got em yesterday - loved one pair - the other pair with the coral disappointed as the corals were different colors. I dont really like stones in my earrings but when they dont match, its just not pretty....

Overall, though I thought it was a good buy and next time I know to ask about the color of the stones.

Maria Belen Nilson - Artist or Copier?

I saw this super cute brooch on ebay - the description says its sort of a reproduction by an original design by Margot. First, I dont think it was Margot I think it was Los Castillo (yes, Margot was married to Antonio). And second, I was unable to verify that this mark is Maria Belen. I did find her bio on the Novica website which says she is from Argentina....
So, just to confirm my position on reproductions - I generally dont approve.
I say generally cuz there are some exceptions like the nice Patzcuaro pin that I blogged about before...I saw it and it was Nice. Nicely done and well made.

This however, to me anyway, looks like a repro. Given that, I think its way overtpriced. I bet you can find the real Margot or Los Catillo for the same price or less.

So Can Anyone Confirm that this is Maria Belens mark?? Thanks

I continue to research and seek information on the Yalalag cross.
The picture is an example with red heart beads and sterling beads.
I came across this brief historical paragraph on crosses in Mexican Folk Jewelry:

The Cross in Folk Jewelry

Jewelry crosses were not worn in the Americas until the Conquest. (I doubt this statement since its contradicted in the next sentence.). Since then, jewelry crosses of fantastic variety have adorned many "Americans," be they South, Central, or North Americans. Among the most interesting is the Yalalag Cross of San Juan Yalalag, Sierra de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. Its basic design, which predates the Conquest, consists of a central cross from which hang three lesser crosses. The decorative elements in the design can be Indian in origin (usually geometric) or Christian (wings, hearts, flowers). A neighboring town, Choapan, uses a cross depicting Christ's head and a pictograph of the Passion (Arma Christi), a Franciscan representation. A cross with two arms in the upper half is called a Patriarchal Cross. This design, combined with two angels, the Caravaca Cross, is found not only in Spain but also in many parts of Mexico and South America. The Maya traditionally used an equilateral cross (the Greek form), representing the four directions or cardinal points. The crucified Jesus has long been interpreted according to local custom and racial origin. His is shown in many diverse styles, the principal idea always being to show "God as Man." Thus, in contrast with the more austere European Christ, the Latin American Cristo is of a more relaxed, naive (naive? Really?) and sensual form, as seen in Peruvian and Bolivian jewelry crucifixes.

So the Cross symbol, like all symbols, is "a key to a realm greater than itself and greater than the man who employs it," to quote symbolist JC Cooper. It is a simpler, lower expression of a higher truth. Throughout all of the Americas, the cross remains, in all its forms and interpretations—be they native cosmological or European-derived Christian—a potent symbol and force.

This bracelet was released in 1989 and is called Corinthian. It was re-released in 2007 in Silver by Avon...

These dazzlers were made by Barrera for Avon in the early 1990s and the design is called Florentine. It was not mass produced and all Barrera jewelry is now eagerly sought by collectors.

Some years ago, my friend dragged me to this store in Pasadena. It didnt look impressive - until I walked in! Rocky Behr (owner) frequently visits and travels to Mexico - especially Michoacan. She really really likes Dia de Los Muertos and offers tours thru the area during muertos season. Ck out her website which also you can also do a virtual visit.

Now, what is not on the website is her selection of jewelry from Oaxaca and Michoacan. Occasionally, she also has vintage sterling Taxco jewelry. Altho I havent seen any top designers they are pretty decent....So if you are anywhere near Southern Calif, make it a point to visit her shop in Pasadena.

Oh yeah, she usually has an exhibit from well known and local artisans...

Los Amigos del Arte Popular is a group that seriously loves Mexican art in all its forms and aesthetics. I met one of the members by chance at an exhibit - she was an older woman that traveled frequently to Mexico with Los Amigos. I love that in addition to their careful research they also have preservation goals for many of the art forms.

Filigree jewelry produced in Oaxaca may also feature carved leaves and flowers in different gold colors, which are attached to a gold filigree framework to which pearls are added to accent the design. [Insert Oaxaca gold earrings comp] In the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and Juchitán, the filigree is embellished with gold coins that were either Mexican or American in origin.

Native women from the town of Yalalag in Oaxaca wear a distinctive Yalalag cross necklace. The Yalalag cross may be in either gold or silver and features a large central cross and three smaller crosses which dangle beneath the large cross.

The origin of the cross is attributed to the Dominican order who settled in this area of Mexico. The design is thought to be from Salamanca, Spain and was copied by an indigenous metalsmith, which, over time, assumed a distinctive Mexican character. Young women from the village of Yalalag wear earrings prior to marriage and when married begin to wear the cross necklace.

Currently, artisans producing jewelry in the traditional manner have felt pressure from overseas. Much of the jewelry sold in Oaxaca currently is produced in China. To preserve this art, value must be assigned to the craft and the time required for production of jewelry in this style. It is our hope that this generation and others to come will seek out traditional Oaxacan jewelry to keep this beautiful art alive and flourishing.

Maza-What?? Mazahua Jewelry - Yeah Baby!!

OK - so I had to Wiki the Mazahua people and here is what I found:

The Mazahua are an indigenous people of Mexico, inhabiting the northwestern portion of the State of Mexico and northeastern area of Michoacán, with a presence also in the Federal District owing to recent migration. The largest concentration of Mazahua is found in the municipalities of San Felipe del Progreso and San José del Rincón, both in Mexico state (Estado de México), near Toluca.

The word Mazahua is of Nahuatl origin meaning "the owners of deer", probably referring to the rich fauna of the mountainous region inhabited by the Mazahua. However they refer to themselves as Hñatho.

So I did more research on the most elusive Mr. Beldin - Here is a sample of his work - sometimes referred to as a 'Tiki' - I also posted the back with his engraved signature. Tho I have also seen his pieces STAMPED Beldin (not engraved).

This particular piece is currently available on the 20th Century Obsession website and is listed for $275.

The article n pic noted below showed up in the LA Mirror in 2007. Tho it appeared that the article itself was written in the late 1950's.

On the matter of Kenneth Beldin, I don't have to check. Years ago I met this man. To the end of my days I will never forget him.

He is tall, very gaunt and not unlike movie character Mischa Auer. His face always had the look of a man tortured or consumed by inner powers telling him to go out into the wilds and look for something.

I first met him around 1939. At the time I was employed by the National Railways of Mexico in Mexico City. Desk and field job interpreting for visiting Americans.

He had been hired by the railway to cook up suitable travel brochures which would help attract more turistas from the Eastern Seaboard, then considered lush territory.

So he was hired. Overnight he disappeared from sight. For days none of his acquaintances or bosses heard anything about Beldin. Police were alerted. The American Consulate as well.

Nearly two weeks later he popped up sporting a beard about the same size as that which now hangs from Ernest Hemingway.

His complexion, originally a pale tan, had turned yellowish. His cheekbones seemed to have increased in bulk and the man's light brown eyes were crisscrossed with countless little red veins.

Kenneth Beldin, the writer-researcher, had done what few brochure writers ever do when amassing material for their travel pitches. He had actually thrown caution to the winds and set up shop in the gosh-darndest villages in the state of Guerrero, where civilization was something the dwellers wanted no part of.

And to complete the job of going native, not only had he picked up Spanish but also a good smattering of Zapotec dialects.

Indians, to Beldin, were the most fascinating thing in life. For hours he would sit on his veranda talking to them, trying to solve their inscrutability and making every effort to be liked by them.

His obsession was to prove, beyond a single scientific doubt, that Mexican Indians had settled in Mexico after centuries of migration from the Orient.

Now married to an Indian maiden named Xochitl, Kenneth Beldin has earned for himself a niche that weighs--and then some. Recently the official organ of the medical profession in Mexico told this:

"Scientists from the U.S. and other countries travel to exchange ideas with him (Beldin). He has the undying gratitude of generations of children in our nation. He will go down in history as "The Apostle of Sesame Meal.' "

Christie Romero - One Year Later

I just saw this on the Center for Jewelry Studies page - I cannot believe its been a year already. The website has established a very nice page for visitors to enter comments and thoughts about Christy. There is also a Memorial Scholarship Fund to attend a 4-day Jewelery Camp.

Felipe Barbosa - New Designer Not Taxco

yeah yeah so its not Taxco - but this guys designs are super cool and in the old designs from the past with twists for today (See La Catrina).
I found his pieces for sale on the Lush Life website - Leave it to Erik for the cool stuff. Erik notes that Mr. Barbosa is from San Miguel de Allende, in Guanajuato - kinda far from Taxco, Guerrero.

Interestingly, the pins or brooches also have a compartment for remembering loved ones - also referred to as reliquaries or recalarios in Espanol. This style is so very Victorian or turn of the century. Usually, the hair of a deceased loved one is placed inside...

Now in another posting about the Patzcuaro pin I noted that it was silvertone. The seller took me to task (see Comments) about my notation. I did have the opportunity to see and handle the Patzcuaro silvertone brooch - And I have to say, it was well made - nice and heavy. For the price, it was very nice.

Mr. Barbosa also executes his pieces in Silvertone...I would also expect them to be well made and should also wear well. I will keep an eye out for his items...I loved them...

Taxco Silver Magazine 1968

I was taken by the cover of this 1968 book slash magazine. Its wonderful silverwork that looked baroque or turn of the century...

I just got this book and because it was 1968 I thought it would include all of the top and noted silversmiths from Taxco...instead only one silvershop was prominently featured: Los Castillo. Dont get me wrong - I love Los Castillo. But in 1968, I would have thought that other silvershops would have been buzzing with activity.

Its a good reference book for those interested in Los Castillo and Taxco.

Her research is always on point and well documented. Always a plus in my opinion....As you know, Margot's work sells in the many hunderds and sometimes in the thousands ($$), despite that my hearbreaks because according to sources, Margot was a pauper who died on a friends couch - her molds sold (not sure by whom) for reproductions that sometimes get sold as 'authentic vintage' (see my previous blogs for that item).

RARE AND HARD TO FIND BOOKS

This just popped up on ebay with a BIN of $200.
Its listed as a rare, hard to find, and out of print (OOP) book.
When (date) did this become a rare, HTF, & OOP print book - well, I knew it was oop but really, rare & htf?
I need enlightening as to the serious increase in price for this item.
Out of curiousity, I checked Amazon and it started at $130 plus s/h - the price went up to a whopping $280. Hmmmmm, maybe $200 isnt so bad after all.

Margot de Taxco marks = Watch out for fakes! The marks on the fakes are not as sharp or clear. Also watch for workmanship - fakes are not as well made - handle some real Margot to compare....careful out there.

Hector Aguilar pieces are also faked and reproduced...I saw some Hector at the Phoenix Airport in a kiosk...who knew?!

I say good because there is an increased interest in Taxco which resulted in reproductions and fakes. Its difficult and quite challenging when assessing authentic pieces if one has not had the opportunity to see and handle the real thing.

Santa Fe International Folk Art Show - - Wow!

FEDERICO JIMENEZ & ALLIE McGRAW (yes, the allie mcgraw)

This show was highly recommended and touted as theee show to go attend...the best exhibitors from around the world and even endorsed or attended by Oprah. I usually dont fall for the hype but I happened to be in the area so I went...OMG!
It was amazing with exhibitors from around the world (who knew!?)
So, one of the ladies said Federico was there (think Oaxacan earrings) so he is the one I looked for...I was not dissapointed.
His pieces were amazing - even more amazing was that nothing was marked...NOTHING - at every turn it was 'Fecderico, how much is this or How much are these?' Even with two handsome assistants, it was chaos cuz even the assitants were "Cuanto estos Federico?" But it was fun and I stayed at his booth for some time perusing his wares - with his Oaxacan style and even Matl stlye doves necklace - hmmmm, interesting.

I also saw and even purchased a very nice reboso in New Mexico colors (burnt orange and yellow). Although, the fringe was not as long as I like, I bought it anyway cuz I really liked it.

If you have been to Santa Fe it really is the land of enchantment - the scenery was stunning and sooo very post card-typical of New Mexico.

Yes, I also had to stop by and visit the MARK NAVARRO gallery - a wall, yes a wall, full of Spratling. Cases of Aguilar, Pineda, Los Castillo, and even HUBERT HARMON. The prices matched the quality and surroundings - mucho dinero - with Hector starting at about $4k...I didnt buy anything but it was fun seeing everything chatting with Mr. Gunther....Thanks!!

I had lots fun and would like to extend a special thanks to my friend that invited me and even had to talk me into going - which now I cant even believe I didnt want to go = = GRACIAS!!

There is so little known about Hubert Harmon, that I decided to do some digging, much in the same way I do my genealogical research. It paid off, as I discovered a grainy newspaper photograph of Hubert and Louise Harmon, taken just 5 days after their wedding. I also pieced together the following information:

BIO: Hubert Pickering Harmon, Jr. was born around 1910 and enjoyed a privileged childhood in Highland Park, Illinois. His father, Hubert Harmon, Sr., was the president of a Chicago Coal Company. His great Uncle (Hubert Pickering) was a student of Homer Winslow.

Prior to his marriage in 1940,he lived abroad, designing fashions in Paris and London. His design work then took him to New York.

He was married Jan 2, 1940 in Greenwich, Ct. to a woman named Mrs. Louise (de Mocher) Frazier. They resided at 51 E 51st in NYC.

I found a couple of 1951 Chicago Newspaper gossip columns, which give us some clues as to his whereabouts and activities. These little tidbits of news give us a clue as to the possible date of his Poodlemania Atlas plates and glasses.

April of 1951
[currently living on the French Riviera] A leather belt designed by Hubert Harmon popped up among highly touted accessories in the current issue of a fashion magazine, indicating he is continuing the work he and Mrs. Harmon started when they lived in Mexico and designed silver and leather goods.

December of 1951
Hubert Harmon will have an exhibit of poodle paintings in a NYC gallery soon. When previously heard from, Mr. Harmon and his wife were living in Mexico and designing in silver, then living on the French Riviera.

Hubert Harmon items are rare, as he was in Taxco for a few short years during the early 1940s. Unlike his fellow American jewelry artists in Taxco at the time (Spratling and Margot) , his aesthetic was one of whimsy, not one heavily influenced by the Mexican culture.

We have included Maya pieces which pay homage to Hubert Harmon designs. Not much is known about Maya at this time.

This just popped up on ebay by the seller addieryta who sells lotsa mexican and taxco jewelrey. I thought this was of interest for 2 resons.
1) Its silvertone. What exactly is silvertone? Well, I can tell you what its not: Sterling. Most likely its a pot metal.
2) Its a Patzcuaro Miguel Covarrubias design which you know I really like.
I never considered 'silvertone' metals for such an iconic Patzcuaro piece. I guess this seller didnt want to go the xtra mile for sterling :(

My Haunted Necklace

So I got this Antonio necklace off eBay - marks are good, its a nice design. After I get it in the mail I notice it stinks...I mean really, it stinks!

I checked the description again to see if there is anything about smell and email the seller. I want to know if this necklace came from a smokers home or owned pets or what cuz it smells. The seller says, no, that its from the daugher who was disposing of her moms estate. So I explain to the seller that after scrubbing it and soaking it, the thing still stinks.

So, I take it to my jeweler - I put it on the counter and ask him to ck for sterling content and see if he can get the smell out....He doesnt smell it but his assistant does. She exclaims "It smells like something crawled in there and...yuck" yeah, smells like something crawled in there and died.

The links are wonderfully crafted - no holes or other openings that some foreign bug could crawl in and die. So how is that even possible?

Anyway, my jeweler doesnt smell it he just gingerly touches it and says he would have it looked at and let me know about the silver content and see if they can use the sonic cleaner to get the smell out.

OK so a week goes by - I call my jeweler and ask about my necklace. His assistant answers the phone and says 'oh, wait, let me pass the phone'. My jewler says there is good news and bad news.
The good news is that the necklace is sterling.
The bad news is they cant get the smell out...and there is worse news.
The smell, he says, is decomposition.
I'm confused.
Decomposition. What does that mean?

He goes on to explain that the another jeweler that looked at it said that his wife worked at the coroners office and that the smell on the necklace came from a dead person - which the necklace had been on for some time...hence the smell.

OMG! No wonder the smell was awful!

OK, so now I have a necklace that someone loved so much that they were buried in it. And someone was so greedy that they desecrated their resting place, ripped off their necklace and sold it, so that it ends up in my house...
Like I dont have enough issues in my own home....

OK. so now what?!

I think I would be upset if I was buried in my favorite necklace only to have it ripped off my neck by some greedy lowlife.

I consult with my daughter and we come from a culture where we do believe in sprits. My sister also has some training is folk healing and shaman type stuff.
So, after some discussion, we decide that incense and prayer is the way to go - for two reasons:
First, the seller isn't inclined to take back the necklace back and return my $$.
Second, I really like it and would like to keep it, if it doesnt stink.

Its been 14 hours since the prayers and incense. I can tell you that it smells sweet, just like sterling is supposed to (well, it does to me). The stench is gone and I hope the spirit has found some peace in that it has a good home with someone that loves it....

I may never wear it. I have been buying sterling jewelry for over 40 years....mexican for over 30. I have never, never seen or smelled anything like this. It is so freaky. I asked my jeweler if he had seen or smelled anything like this and he said 'never' and chuckled.

So you saw my earlier posts on fake Antonio's and Spratling's. But nothing bugs me more than the mis-idenfied - yes, I suppose ppl can make honest mistakes, by mis-identifying Coro. So, here is one currently on eBay = You see these alot. I posted the marks - there are like 5 things wrong with the mark. Can you identify the mistakes?

So the marks are in block lettering CORO - should be in script Coro.
Should say Made in Mexico - not Taxco.
This one is stamped on the piece itself = watch out for those markings that are applied to the piece. I really dont like those - its like they SCREAM I'm A FAKE!!
So be careful out there...I did buy one of these fake coro pieces - the quality and workmanship just isnt there. You can tell even if not marked. But the fake markings just say it all - scream it all....

OK so I am having some thoughts about Agnes and my own blog which really features vintage taxco...while Agnes is not vintage and is quite contemporary, her influences are clearly from the past. That and she was in the Maestros exhibit. In reviewing the Davis and Pack book the last chapter features newer designers including Spratling, Aguilar, and Antonio among others (Margot, Matl, Davis, etc). Those were considered newer since Davis and Pack was focused on the folk and regional jewelry. So, in considering Agnes I think she is the future with an influence of the past. Your thoughts?

OMG! How fabulous is this Antonio wrap bracelet!? I love love love it. Yes it was bit over my budget and yet I had to have it - after all, what is a credit card for if not for an Antonio??
Severely modernist and with all the proper markings.
So, I have seen this in 14k gold and due to the price (over $3k) I passed - now I kick my self cuz its really quite wonderful.
Its very well made and there is no room for any type of 'adjustment' so it is wear as is where is...I love it and have worn it a couple of time altho it takes some practice to put it on cuz its not adjustable.

OK so previously I listed alleged Spratling ebay listings - - Here are the alleged Antonio Pineda items also currently listed on eBay...These made me LMAO....These are not fakes so much as they are inaccurately listed and identified as Antonio. For collectors and afficionados of Taxco, Antonio is prob the most identifiable. In some instances, even without any marks, you can pick out his work at ten paces. It screams quality, modernist, and ulimately luxe.

and listed as a salad serving set by Antonio.

Yeah its an Antonio and I'm a Contessa.

OMG This is BIN for like $70 and shockingly no one has snatched up this 'Antonio' Ha Ha Ha

Heres another listing. Item #110470308547. Whats so funny is that this has been on ebay for MONTHS! It started at like $1000 with this same listing description:

So now its a mere $230 = I'm again shocked no one has snatched it up.

Finally, this is the Antonio infamous crown mark that is frequently mistaken by less versed taxco buyers for the real Antonio crown mark...Again, LMAO...

I know what you're thinking - why dont I just email the sellers and tell them their listing isnt what they say...For 2 reasons. First, I dont like doing homework for someone else. Sellers should do their own research before listing anything. Hence sleepers. Second, most sellers (I think) know what they are trying to sell and get upset that you are calling them on it and then they insist on getting into an email debate about what their item is or isnt...Yes, I know this because I have emailed a couple of sellers noting its not what they think it is...With all the info on the internet I think its so much easier to ID pieces... OK on to the difference between Villasana (AV) and Navarrette (AN).

I know that sometimes the seller is simply unaware but there are others that are deliberate - those I dont like cuz buyers may not know that they are buying crap - I am a strong believer in 'buyer beware' but I dont like it when the sellers are simply lying....so I wanted to share with you some current posts that made me LOL:

This is my favorite - here is the ebay description for a SPRATLING:
I have researched William Spratling, and have come to the conclusion that this is indeed made by William Spratling, although it is missing the Spratling portion of the stamping. It does have the Taxco and 980 mark. The design is also very Spratling. This silver bracelet dates to the 30's or very early 40's.

OK so the seller says its SPRATLING even tho there are no Spratling marks - Yeah and I'm a size 4! We've seen this bracelet (and necklace) many times before - no its not spratling its just a nice example of Mexican jewelry. Also, the TAXCO 980 are considered secondary and tertiary marks...if there is no primary Spratling mark its not a Spratling...

000h how cool is this piece?! Yeah, it has issues but it was a good price so I went ahead and got it.

I had a consult with my jeweler yesterday and he said because of the way its constructed the silver near the 'joints' is weakend. He showed me a couple that were already beginning to show some teeny cracks :(
So he is repairing those and is gonna see if his lapidary guy and recontruct the one missing dangle thingy.

OK so this Spratling bracelet is currently listed on eBay - the seller is silverborders. According to the item description, the provenance for this item is the CAROL BERK COLLECTION. So is Carol really selling her items? Has anyone heard any thing about that? I'm surprised cuz if you read her books she definitely has a passion for the good Taxco...How can you part with it?
I just cant imagine - Just today I visited my daughter at work - she was wearing the most amazing sterling Taxco necklace - Of course, it was an Antonio - - and on extended loan to my kid - - but I could never actually permanently part with it...

WoW! Super nice modernist designed by the master Mr. Pineda - Properly marked crown with silver content of his ususal 970. I have the matching bracelet but its a knockoff - despite that its nice and I plan to hear them together - Well, if I ever leave my house! LOL

My friend has raved about this show for years. Finally, I got to go and ck it out for myself. I know that the emphasis is on Native American and Indian/Dead Pawn jewelry but I also know that every once in a while in that sea of sterling silver, there is inevitably some nice Mexican Sterling. Sure enough I was not disappointed and even met the folks from Deja Voodoo (ck their websit n da Gov't Mule song by same name). I spent sometime in their booth before finally moving on to oohing and aaahing Sassy and her vintage Mexican GOLD Oaxacan earrings. These are very rare - so she was very sweet, kindly waves me behind her table and she has a small SHOE BOX full of them!! She says she goes to Mex to buy them - they were soo awsome but at a $600 starting price it was too much for me. I was content with the ooogling.

I did snag a Los Ballesteros Necklace with Lapis or sodalite - an older piece that looks Modernist to me.

I also saw several Spratling, the HA Georgia O'Keefe belt, one or two Antonios - Oh, no wait, those were mine that I was wearing LOL!! Well, Deja Voodoo did have a couple at their booth and currently on their website.

Overall, it was a very good show and I was pleased with the set up and presentation - that and I didnt have to drive....

HOT! Hector Aguilar -

OK so this bracelet just closed on ebay and it went for the staggering amount of just over $6,500 - - I heart the old and very vintage Hector Aguilar but the final price on this is soooo crazy. I talked with my friend about what Taxco designers are going for and we are surprised that its skyrocketing even tho its a bad economy. Not sure if you watch Antiques Roadshow but even the appraiser there said 'buy buy buy'. So I keep l@@king for that next good buy...Of course you saw my obscure Guadalupe Castellanos - I am so pleased with that purchase....

Guadalupe Castellanos Grotesque & Rare

You dont know how lucky you are to be one of my followers. This is SOO obscure that you have to pull out the definitive book on Mexican Jewelry, of course the one by Davis & Pack. What is so interesting is that according to Davis & Pack, this designer had no makers mark or designer mark....OK so how do you know its really him if there is no mark?? Yeah, yeah, I know. I am a stickler for markings. Of course even marked items can be fake (see Phyliss Goddard). So the fact there is no mark does not detract from this particular desginer who is described by Davis & Pack as grotesque, using a mix of both sterling and copper. His overly large pieces are distinctive. Having shopped for several decades this was the first Guadalupe Castellano I have seen - clearly identified and pictured in Davis & Pack (page 206). I just had to share it with you - - Oh yeah, my kid rolled her eyes and said it bordered on hideous - you see if it were actually hideous, it might be more wearable. LOL.

Here are a couple of excerpts from the Davis & Pack "In 1938, writitng for a Mexican art magazine, William Spratling...mentioning five men. One of those was Guadalupe Castellanos who lives in Iguala but sells his work in Taxco and Acapulco...[h]e does large primitive-looking pieces. He darkens all his silver and often combines it with copper, leaving only a few burnished spots.
His chains are heavy and his beads are never just balls, they are flattened, fluted, or melon shaped.

So here is one of my pet peeves (the list is very long). So I really hate it when I see FRED DAVIS, SPRATLING, MARGOT or ANTONIO in the Title listings - whether its Ebay or any website seller list then when you actually read the description and see the markings its NOT what it purports to be.

I think the reason I really dislike it is because the seller is LYING - plain and simple. Why cant they just say its well made from the Taxco school? Because its a scam to fool the buyer that may fall for their lie so they can simply make a few bucks. Its too bad really - sometimes I think the seller really doesnt know and didnt do the proper reseearch. But mostly they just want to sell stuff for the most $$. Buyer beware I guess.

OK so I just acquired a fabulous necklace - that I paid way too much for but evidently I had to have it.

Ken Who!? Ken Belden Taxco Sculptor

So I have seen some Ken Beldin before tho not much. From what I can gather he was a a sculptor who worked outside of Taxco in the 70's. His work is usually is referred to as Tiki's - I guess cuz thats what they look like... His work doesnt come up that often (even on the specialy websites) and wonder if his body of work is limited. No references in any of my big books of silver and nada on Wiki. LMK if you have any 411 on Ken Beldin. Thanks Tia

UPDATE: Researching the Guadalupe Castellano there is a minute blurb on Ken in the Davis & Pack book: We have seen a few pieces done by Ken Belden, an American living in Tenancingo, which were interesting in color, being mostly of copper and brass and a little white metal. He is the cutodian of archeolgical stones and it is from these that he derives his motifs.

NOTE: Its unclear to me on the correct spelling is Belden or Beldin.
Davis & Pack says Belden but I swear the markings have an 'I' for Beldin.

Victoria Taxco

I just got this necklace - I really like it and so did my kid who decided she should wear it. So its in her jewelery box. I don't have many Victoria pieces. Not sure if it's just too pricey for me or I simply don't come across her pieces very often. At any rate, this necklace is great - nice look and properly marked - always a must for me.
